FAQ

Common questions

When do I have to register for VAT?
Once your VAT-taxable turnover exceeds £90,000 in any rolling twelve-month period, or if you expect to exceed it in the next thirty days alone. It is a rolling test rather than a financial year one, which is a common misunderstanding.
Should I register voluntarily before I have to?
Sometimes it is worth it. If most of your customers are VAT-registered businesses (so they can reclaim the VAT you charge) and you pay a lot of VAT on your own purchases, registering early can leave you better off, because you can reclaim that VAT. If most of your customers are members of the public (who cannot reclaim it), registering early usually just makes you 20% more expensive to them. We will work out which applies to you before you decide.
Which VAT scheme should I be on?
It depends on your margins, your customers and your cash flow. The Flat Rate and Cash Accounting schemes suit some businesses well and others badly. We review this rather than defaulting to standard VAT.
What does Making Tax Digital mean for VAT?
You must keep digital records and file returns through compatible software, with a digital link from your records to your return. If you are with us on Xero, this is simply how it works already.
Can you help if HMRC inspects my VAT?
Yes. We handle the correspondence, prepare the documentation and deal with HMRC on your behalf, including partial exemption and cross-border positions where they apply.
