FAQ

Common questions

Does Making Tax Digital apply to me?
It depends on your qualifying income, which is your self-employment and property income combined, before expenses. If it was over £50,000 for 2024/25, you should have started from 6 April 2026 and can still sign up. If it was over £30,000 for 2025/26, you will need to start from 6 April 2027, and if it is over £20,000 for 2026/27, from 6 April 2028.
Does this replace my tax return?
No. You send quarterly updates to HMRC through compatible software during the year, and you still submit one tax return for each tax year through that software by 31 January following the end of the tax year.
What software will I need?
MTD-compatible software with digital record keeping. We set clients up on Xero with Hubdoc, so receipts and invoices are captured automatically and the quarterly updates are not a burden.
I have both self-employment and rental income. How is the threshold worked out?
They are added together. It is the combined total that decides whether you are in and from when, which is why people with modest income from two sources are often caught unexpectedly.
Is it more work than filing a tax return once a year?
There are more submissions, as quarterly updates are sent during the year and you still submit a tax return by 31 January. With records kept digitally as you go, each update is quick, and most clients find they have a clearer picture of their position well before the return is due.
