What we do for West Kirby, Hoylake, Meols and Caldy

Property and seasonal trade make up most of the work along this coast, and both are handled here.

Working to your season

The questions that matter here tend to arise during the season itself: whether a late run of bookings tips you over the VAT threshold, how your own fortnight in the holiday flat affects the figures, whether a sale is better completed after 5 April. Those are cheap to settle in July and expensive to unpick the following January, so we would rather hear them as they come up. West Kirby is the end of the line, so the train to us runs through without a change.

How it works

Getting started

1

Book a free call

Tell us what you have: a company, self-employment, a let house, a holiday let, or some mixture of them. The call is free, and if what you need is one return a year rather than an accountant on a monthly fee, we will tell you that.

2

See the fee before anything starts

The fee comes in writing with the work it covers: a single price for a one-off Self Assessment return, or a monthly figure where a company, payroll or VAT runs alongside it. Nothing begins until you have accepted it.

3

We pick it up where the season has got to

You do not have to wait for a year-end to change accountant. We ask your present accountant for clearance, put the HMRC authorisations in place and take the records on from wherever the season has reached, so the busy months are not reconstructed from memory afterwards.

FAQ

Questions we are asked

Do we need to meet in person?
Only if you would rather. Accounts, tax returns and HMRC authorisations are all dealt with online, so a set of accounts can be approved from a kitchen table in Caldy. If you prefer to talk the figures through face to face, the office is at Second Floor, 61 Hamilton Square, Birkenhead, about 25 minutes by direct train from West Kirby.
I would rather drive than take the train. Where do I leave the car?
West Kirby station has no car park at all, and Hoylake has the only sizeable one on this stretch of the line, with Blue Badge bays, so driving to Hoylake and taking the train in is often simpler than driving the whole way. The square itself sits inside Wirral Council's central Birkenhead controlled parking zone: on-street pay and display, card or phone rather than cash, with the current tariffs on the council's website.
I let a holiday home on the coast. Which rules apply to it now?
Which regime it sits in decides the rest. In England a self-catering property is rated for business rates instead of council tax only where it is let commercially for short stays, was available to let for at least 140 nights and actually let for at least 70 in the past twelve months, and will be available for 140 in the next twelve. Fall short of that and it stays in council tax, where Wirral charges a premium on unoccupied furnished homes unless an exception applies, so check the current position with the council. For Income Tax and Capital Gains Tax, a holiday let has formed part of your ordinary property business since 6 April 2025.
Nearly all my income arrives between May and September. How does that affect what I pay HMRC?
The payment dates do not move with the trade. Payments on account are each half of the previous year's tax bill and fall due on 31 January and 31 July, with any balance for the year also due on 31 January. They are not required where last year's bill came to under £1,000, or where more than 80 per cent of your tax was collected at source, through PAYE for example. Where the income is seasonal we prepare the return early, so the January and July figures are known by the autumn and can be set aside out of the season's takings.
